Langtang Region Trekking - Naturally and Culturally Rich Trekking Region of Nepal!

Langtang region trekking is the third most popular trekking region in Nepal, it is also one of the nearest trekking destinations from Kathmandu. Though near and easily accessible from the capital city, this region remains relatively unspoiled and less developed. Without flight, all the trekking trips in this region can start with a private or local transportation. The most famous starting points of the Langtang region are Sundarijal and Shaybrubesi. The scenery in the area is spectacular and the trek is more adventurous as the region is visited by fewer trekkers. To the west side of Langtang region is Ganesh Himal with a range of 6000 to 7000 meters. The Gosainkund and Helambu region lies to its south; these can be combined with Langtang to make treks from 7 days to 21 days. The area was designated Nepal's first Himalayan National Park in 1971. We can also observe the awe-inspiring views of Mt. Manaslu from this region.

Langtang region is occupied by Tamang and Sherpa people whose religious practices, language and dress are much more similar to those of Tibet than to the traditions of their cousins in the middle hills. The forests in the region have temperate and sub-alpine vegetation. The major attractions of Langtang region trekking are the sacred Gosinkunda Lake, Tamang Heritage trail, famous Kyangjin Gompa, Cheese factory, green meadow and fields grazing yak, sheep and goats herd which provides unique experience of remote village life.

Langtang region trekking presents awe-inspiring views of mountain peaks including Mt. Manaslu (8187m), Ganesh Himal ( 7406m), Langtang Lirung (7350m), Gauri Shanker (7145m), Dorje Lakpa (6990m), Naya Kanga (5846m) and some other trekkers peaks like Yala, Panggen Dopka and popular glaciers Kimshung and Lirung. Visiting a cheese factory or try climbing some trekkers' peaks from Kyangjin Gompa is another attraction which helps any trekkers lured in this region. Langtang Region trekking is also popular for nature lovers and the wildlife found in this region includes migratory birds, deer, monkey, Tahr and Pika.

Any trekking trips in Langtang region, spring and autumn are the best season and most of the trekking trails in Langtang, Gosainkunda and Helambu are well established by the guest houses. But there are no such facilities in the Ganja la area where only camping trek is possible. A trip to Langtang region offers an opportunity to explore the Tamang villages, climb small trekker's peaks and to visit glaciers at a more comfortable altitude than the other trekking region in Nepal.

Attraction of the Langtang Region

Langtang National Park:
In Langtang Region we will get an opportunity to walk through the area of Langtang National park. Langtang National Park was established in 1976 to conserve and protect the unique flora and fauna of the region. It is one of the nearest national parks from the capital city of Nepal, Kathmandu. This park is spread in the Central Himalayan Region. The area of this park is 710 sq. km. It extends over parts of Nuwakot, Rasuwa, and Sindhupalchok districts in the southern mountainous terrain of the Nepal-China (Tibet) border... See more.

In 1998 an areas of 420 km square in and around the park declare as a buffer zone. The park represents a meeting point between indo-Malayan and Palearctic realms, and holds a rich biodiversity. The Buffer zone management is a joint venture between the park office and the local communities. Local communities have a decision-making role in the management of such areas. Additionally, the local communities or the BZ receive 30 to 50 % of the park revenue for the better management of natural resources to ensure a sustainable supply of resources and community development.

Seasonal Attractions
From the beginning of September to end of May the region offers a variety of natural splendors, from lush temperate river valleys with screeching langur to spectacular old growth forest and glacial-craved cliffs rimmed by snow-covered peaks. The weather is also relatively dry except January-February when one may come across snow. Autumn is the best time to visit the Park. By April bursts of red, pink, and while rhododendrons stretch into towering canopies of fir and oak forests. Advent of warm weather makes the Yak and Chauri herds ascend to higher elevation, making occasional camps in the pasturelands, to follow years of tradition. From June to august, skies are heavy with monsoon rains. During August, a lively festival at Gosaikunda Lake attracts thousands of Hindu pilgrims and September witnesses' spectacular display of wild flowers, while livestock herds, once again, return to lower pastures

Flora & Fauna
Alpine and Sub-tropical vegetation characterized by Sal (Shorea robusta) forest in the southern section of the park is gradually taken over by hill forest (2000-2600m) consisting of Chirpine, Rhododendron, and Nepalese alder.

The temperate zone (2600-3000m) is covered mainly by oak forest fading to old growth forest of silver fir, hemlock, and larch in the lower sub-alpine zone (3000-3600m). The Nepalese larch (larixnepalensis), the only deciduous conifer in the region, is found in this park and few places elsewhere. Throughout these zones different species of Rhododendron such as R. arboretum, R. barbatum, R. campanulatum, and R. lepidotum (scrubs) to name a few, form a colorful under story. Tree species such as birch, silver fir, Sorbus microphyla and twisted Rhododendron campanulatum are found near the tree line. It is here at 4000m Juniper and Rhododendron shrubs (R. anthopogon) slowly dissolve into expansive alpine grassland meadows.

In Langtang region there is high expansion of high meadows. These meadows provide summer habitat for numerous ungulate species such as musk deer and Himalayan tahr. One of the endangered animal red pandas is found in this protected area. The park is also well known for its populations of Himalayan black bear, snow leopard, wild dog, ghoral, serow and more than 250 species of birds.
