Annapurna Base Camp Trek Overview

Annapurna Base Camp trek is one of the few treks that combines much diversity of landscapes and brings you so close to the base of 7000 and 8000 meters peaks in such a short period of time. The most visited ABC trekking for 10 days is an easy and pleasant trek up to the base of mighty Annapurna I (8091m).

The trail starts from the lowland and goes through terrace farming villages, lush rhododendron, and bamboo forests to high-altitude landscapes with the Annapurna range in view most of the time. This trek also is known as the Annapurna Sanctuary trek which is the world-famous and fascinating trek into the Himalayan Mountains to the base of Annapurna I, the tenth-highest peak in the world is one of the stunning treks in the Annapurna region.

Annapurna Base Camp Trek commences after a scenic drive or flight from Kathmandu to the vibrant city of Pokhara. This is a gorgeous city, surrounded by the Himalayan peaks and tropical hills. We will have a chance to explore the city and boating on Phewa Lake. The next day, transferring to Phedi or Nayapul, both places are starting points of Annapurna base camp trekking, the trek continues to Chhomrong, a beautiful Magar village on the lap of the gorgeous Annapurna south.

The trail continues down to Chhomrong River and climbs up to Sinuwa from where mighty Fishtail Mountain gets close by you. Walking through the bamboo forest to Dovan, Himalaya and Deurali towards the Annapurna base camp we get rewarded by the views of towering peaks and vast rock walls. From Deurali the landscapes change into barren and as the gorge widens, we climb to Fishtail base camp at 3700m on the lateral moraine of Annapurna south glacier.

The steady ascent to Annapurna base camp reveals the full splendor of a huge natural amphitheater. Here at base camp, we are fascinated by 360-degree views of Himalayan giants including Annapurna I, Fishtail, Gangapurna, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and many more snow-capped peaks. The stunning Annapurna glacier is another marvelous thing to see from Base camp.

We trek back to Chhomrong and continue to Dhampus or Nayapul, on the way back we can enjoy the natural hot spring at Jinudanda. Annapurna Base Camp has many options and itineraries. Here below, we have presented a 10-day itinerary with Kathmandu and Pokhara tours.

Best Time to Trek Annapurna Base Camp

The best times to undertake Annapurna Base Camp Trek are during the spring and autumn seasons. Spring spans from mid-March to the end of May, and autumn spans from mid-September to the third week of November. These two seasons guarantee the best weather, less rainfall, and splendid scenery of the surroundings.

Trekkers can undertake Annapurna Base Camp trek throughout the year. However, winter and monsoon seasons often present harsh weather conditions, such as heavy rainfall, snowfall, wet or slippery trail, and landslide that make trekking difficult and risky. So, it is best to do this trek during autumn or spring.

Physical Fitness and Experience Requirements

The 10-day Annapurna Base Camp Trekking is a moderate trek. Unlike Everest Base Camp Trek, the highest point one can reach in this trek is 4,120 meters. There is a less or low risk of potential altitude sickness. However, trekkers can encounter physical issues such as fatigue that are common during long treks.

One must be fit mentally and physically for this trek. Previous experience in high-altitude trekking will be useful, although not a mandatory requirement.
The trek begins at the altitude of 1,010 meters at Nayapul and climbs through a lush forested trail towards the rugged mountainous terrain. The trek materializes at an altitude of 4,120 meters. You can get enough acclimatization along the trek.

To better prepare beforehand, you can train for endurance, strength, and altitude. While training for altitude, mustn’t climb over 1,000 meters in a day, and should always practice sleeping at a lower altitude.

Accommodations during 10 Days Annapurna Base Camp Trek

The accommodation of the trek includes two nights at Thamel, two nights at one of the finest hotels in Lakeside, Pokhara, and eight nights at comfortable tea-houses (lodges) along the Annapurna trail.

10 days ABC trek is a well-developed trail with the availability of quality lodges in almost every major stop. The first two nights of the trek at Ghandruk and Chhomrong, offer accommodation with an attached bathroom. Most tea-houses in the lower Annapurna region offer free-of-cost hot-shower facilities. The rest of the nights at the villages of Himalaya, Machhapuchere Base camp, Annapurna Base Camp, and Sinuwa offer accommodation with basic facilities.
