Reason to Book Early

Securing special permits for the Manaslu Circuit hiking

As most treks in Nepal you’ll need the proper documentation before being allowed access to trekking regions or trails. So what type of permits do you need for the Manaslu Circuit trek? You’ll need a total of 3 permits before you can start the trek around Manaslu. But, it gets a bit more complicated than just going to the permit office… Since the Manaslu region touches the Tibetan border and to protect the natural reserve of the region the government has declared the entire Manaslu region as restricted. This means that if you want to enter this region you’ll need to full fill certain conditions.

What type of conditions is required to trek in the Manaslu region?

1. In order to get your permits you can only book through a licensed trekking agency located in Nepal such as Alpine Eco Trek & Expedition.

2. You need a minimum of two trekkers in order to be eligible for a permit

3. Trekkers need to be accompanied by a local guide hired by the trekking agency that issues your permits. Meaning no unguided treks in the Manaslu region.

Which permits and how to get them for the Manaslu Circuit trek?

If you were to trek only in the Manaslu region you’ll have to obtain two permits. The Manaslu Circuit trek is an exception as its crosses into the Annapurna region via the Himalayan Mountain Pass Larkya La. As so, you’ll need a permit for the Annapurna region as well! Here is a list of the actual permits required for the Manaslu Circuit trek;

A Restricted Area Permit (RAP)

This RAP or Special Permit is required from the villages of Jagat up to Samagoan. Without it you won’t be allowed access into the Manaslu’s restricted areas. The cost for this permit is calculated per how many days you spend inside the restricted zone. At Jagat it will be checked and verified, as well as at Samagoan to see if you overstayed or not. The trekking agency will require a digital passport-size photo or copy to order this permit prior to your arrival in Nepal.

Cost for a Restricted Area Permit

High Season (Sep-Nov) charges are a bit higher, for the first 7 days $100 USD is charged ($14.29/day). For every additional day a charge of $15 USD/day will be added.

Low Season (Dec-Aug) charges are a bit lower, for the first 7 days $75 USD is charged ($10.71/day). For every additional day a charge of $10 USD/day will be added.

A Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP)

The Manaslu Conservation Area Permit check post starts from the village of Philim and end at Tal. This permit is there to help develop the local communities, protect local wildlife, and maintain trekking trails. Similar as the RAP the trekking agency requires a digital passport-size photo or copy to obtain this MCAP permit.

Cost for a Manaslu Conservation Area Permit

The cost for this permit is the whole year the same and does not make any difference between high or low seasons. With a total cost of only $30 USD, you can obtain this permit via a registered trekking agency.

An Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)

After crossing the Larkya La Pass and heading down to the exit village of the Manaslu Circuit trek at Beshishar another check post will require a permit for the Annapurna Conservation Area. Since you are now in the Annapurna region of Nepal you’ll need its permit as well. Here is where things become interesting. Did you know that the Annapurna region hosts many popular treks in Nepal? And since you already got the permit you can even extend your trek and join up with the Annapurna Circuit trek which trekking trail starts from Beshishar! Similar as the RAP, and MCAP the trekking agency requires a digital passport-size photo or copy to obtain this ACAP permit.

Cost for an Annapurna Conservation Area Permit

Similar as the MCAP cost, the ACAP rate does not make a difference between high and low seasons. A total cost of only $30 USD is required to obtain this permit via a licensed trekking agency.

Now you can calculate the costs individually but licensed trekking agencies usually include permit costs in their package rates.

Similar to our early bird offer for the Manaslu Circuit trek all permit costs are included as well as getting your permits early and on time.

FAQ's

Being located in a restricted area, a great part of the Manaslu Circuit trekking trail leads to the beaten path. With less traffic to deal with than during other treks in Nepal, the Manaslu Circuit trekking trail has a great number of guest and tea houses offering beverages, hot meals, and lodgings. The trail leads through forests into the high snowy mountains, and back down into the jungle after crossing the Larkya La Pass. There are multiple exciting river crossings, waterfall sightings, and rocky narrow parts during the trail, creating the ultimate adventure. Along the trekking trail of the Manaslu Circuit trek, you’ll find multiple stupas, gompas, and old monasteries. These, some dating back centuries are still open and used for prayer and spiritual support. Manaslu translates into “the spirit of the mountain”, and while trekking its trail many of our guests have felt a sense of spirituality, peace, and self-respect! The first part of the trek takes place in the Budhi Gandaki River. During this part of the trek, you’ll slowly gain elevation by trekking upstream. Some rural and cultural villages come by along the way, as well as incredible natural views. At Samagoan and Samdo we hold an acclimatization day to prevent any chances of getting acute mountain sickness. During these days we explore around, and visit the old Pungyen Gompa monastery that offers excellent views of the Manaslu Glacier. One of the tougher parts of the trek is the crossing of the Larkya La Pass. As the highest point of the trek at 5,160m/16,929ft.

Starting at Sotikhola from 710m/2,329ft, and reaching up to 5,160m/16,929ft while crossing the Larkya La Pass, there is quite an altitude difference during the Manaslu Circuit trek! The trails while naturally beautiful ascend about 650m/2,133ft a day. You’ll spend an average of 7 hours a day trekking in a pristine Himalayan paradise! One of the bigger risks of trekking in the Himalayas is the chance of getting hit by acute mountain sickness or AMS. This affliction comes by ascending too much and too fast. And with these daily altitude differences while on the Manaslu Circuit trek the chances of AMS become very real! As professionals in the Himalayas, we take extra care of your safety and comfort while on the trek. Designating special acclimatization days helps you get used to the newer and higher elevations. Furthermore, during these “acclimatization days,” we’ll be holding practice hikes to some prominent places such as the Pungyen Gompa, and holding optional hikes that offer incredible views of the surrounding mountains. During the trekking, you’ll be ascending an average of 500m/1,640ft a day, except for days; 7, 8, 12, and 13. During these days you’ll be ascending about 800m/2,625ft! Each new altitude offers different vantage points, and new vegetation as well as a change in the local wildlife.

Talking about the local wildlife, there are quite a few exotic and endangered animals that you can spot during the Manaslu Circuit hike! These include the rare snow leopard, the Himalayan Tahr, the Pika, the Himalayan, and Blue Marmot. If you want the best chance to see a snow leopard in Nepal during the trek, we advise you to book early for the months of March and April. This is also known as the mating season, and more snow –leopards come out in search of a mate. Besides mammals, the Manaslu region has a wide variety of birds as well. Bird spotters might be interested to see; the rare red-headed vulture, the elusive river lapwing, or the beautiful crimson-horned pheasant! Booking the Manaslu Circuit early on can greatly increase your chances to spot more wild and exotic animals. As we can secure you the best guides who know the area, and all habitats.

Imagine a trail starting from tropical jungles and heading higher and higher into the snowy Himalayas, where it crosses a 5,160m/16,929ft high mountain pass before descending back down into a different region. You can understand that the geology of the Manaslu Circuit trek is both intriguing and offers a variety of landscapes, scenes and especially trekking experiences. Besides these, the trek offers great views of the Himalayan Mountains.
