Kailash Overland Tour Overview

Kailash overland tour, starts and ends in the vibrant city of Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal. After three days of a continuous drive across the vast Tibetan plateau, we reached an exceptionally beautiful turquoise lake with floating swans and a spectacular Mount Kailash.

For Hindus, Mt Kailash is the abode of Lord Shiva. Both Lake Mansarovar and Mt Kailash have religious significance for both Hindus and Buddhists. Four great rivers originate from Lake Mansarovar – the Indus, Karnali, Bramhaputra and the Sutlej.

The 53 km periphery is the trail for circumambulation around this holy mountain and takes 3 days. The Kora or circumambulation starts at Darchen, some 40 Km from Lake Mansarovar. After the Kora, we will drive back to Kathmandu. En route, we will enjoy a great view of the world’s highest mountains, meet the nomad sheepherders and enjoy the unique beauty of the Tibetan desert.

Holy Mt. Kailash and Lake Mansarovar is one of the most revered Hindu Pilgrimage sites in the Himalayan region, dedicated to Lord Shive it is the ultimate pilgrimage which every devotee would like to take, to complete the Parikarma (circumnavigation) of Mt. Kailash and Lake Mansarovar.

Believed to have been formed 30 million years ago, during the early stages of the Himalayas. Mt Kailash is one of the most sacred sites in the entire mountain range and one of the holiest places for the Pious Pilgrims, who cross oceans and continents the world over to catch a glimpse of the abode of Lord Shiva and Parbati.

Mt. Kailash and Lake Mansarovar are sacred sites forfollowers of Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, Bonism and many other faiths. Each year thousands of people undertake the holy journey through the mountains and plains of Nepal and Tibet (China) to reach this sacred Land.

Mount Kailash – a great mass of black rock soaring over 22,000 feet, Mt. Kailash (6,741 m) is located to the north of the Himalayan barrier, fully within the border of the Tibetan Autonomous Region. With a majestic beauty and four sperate faces it is a truly phenomenal mountain.

It is the spiritual center for four great religions: Hinduism, Tibetan Buddhism, the Jain Religion and the pre-Buddhist animistic religion – Bonpo. For the Hindus, Mt. Kailash is the earthly manifestation of Mt. Meru, their spiritual center of the universe, described as a fantastic ‘World Pillar’ 84,000 miles high. Around this world pillar all else revolves, its roots reaching the depths of hell and peak kissing the heaven skies.

Atop this grand mountain lives the God, Shiva and his consort Parbati. For the Jains, an Indian religious group, Kailash is the site where their first prophet achieved enlightenment. For the older, more ancient religion of Bon, it is the site where its founder Shanrab is said to have descended from the Heavens.

Spread out on the Tibetan plateau beside Mount Kailash is a giant lake of changing colors – Lake Mansarovar. Brahma, the creator, had a mind (Man) for the creation of a lake (Sarovar), hence its name Mansarovar.

A pilgrimage to Mount Kailash and a bath in the Mansarovar is believed to bring about salvation (Moksha) and washes away all the sins committed in life. Over the centuries pilgrims have constantly journeyed immense distances to achieve enlightenment or cleanse themselves of sin, braving enormous distances, treacherous weather and bandit attacks.

Mt. Kailash & Lake Mansarovar tour, the adventure commences with a drive across the Himalayas, west into Tibet to the Holy Lake Mansarovar. Document Requirements

The most important document is a valid passport. All travelers, irrespective of their nationality and geographical location, must have a valid passport for traveling to Mt. Kailash and Lake Mansarovar are situated in Tibet, China. The passport should be a minimum of six months valid from the date of entering into Tibetan territories to visit Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar. It is the sole responsibility of the traveler to ensure the authenticity and validity of their documents.

Fitness Requirements

For the Kailash Overland tour in the remote land of the Tibetan Autonomous Region, (TAR) physical and mental fitness is very important. It is advisable to get a medical examination with your regular doctor before you plan to go on the Mount Kailash tour. Anyone suffering from back problems may find the long drives on bumpy roads difficult. People suffering from Asthma or any kind of dust allergy are forewarned that the amount of dust on the road necessitates wearing a mask. Apart from that, it is a good idea to prepare in advance with brisk walking, and some regimen of exercise or preferably yoga asanas and pranayama. Eventually, for most people, the Kailash Kora is an act of faith.

Health Precautions

During the tour in Kailash, Tibet, with the increasing altitude and decreasing oxygen level, the travelers must eat well, drink plenty of water or juices etc., take proper rest in order to get acclimatized (adjusting the body and mind with the local weather at high altitude) for a safe and comfortable journey.

High Altitude Sickness

Based on the health of an individual, the impact of high altitude sickness may differ. It is not necessary that one will get high altitude sickness during the trip, but it is also not sure that one will not face this sickness. High altitude sickness is very common while traveling to such a height in mountains and this goes away with time, depending on your own immunity and ability to overcome this situation. Acclimatize yourself properly, keep yourself hydrated during the trip, eat well, practice yoga and meditation before and during your trip to avoid or overcome trip-altitude sickness. If you face high altitude sickness and need some medical help, talk to our guides and follow their instructions. In a few days, if the health does not improve and the guides suggest you not go to higher altitude, you must not avoid his suggestion.

Emergency Evacuation

During the Kailash overland tour, in the event of an emergency, we provide all possible and available emergency evacuation facilities, such as ground ambulance, helicopter ambulance, doctors, hospitalization etc., but the same is payable by the travelers only. We do not take any liability for payment of hospital bills, medicines, emergency evacuation transport, additional accommodation and food bills etc. One must carry sufficient money to overcome such situations.

Accommodation during the Trip

Twin-sharing rooms (single rooms available for an additional cost) in a deluxe/standard hotel in the heart of Kathmandu can be organized while in Nepal. In Tibet, very simple guest houses with shared rooms and basic toilet facilities (in case of a heavy rush and emergency, we do use tented camps as well) will be your accommodation.

Day 06: Hiking around Kerung village

Start Kailash Kora: Trek to Dirapuk. Overnight at guesthouse with full board.

Day 11: Trek to Juthulpuk via Dolma La Pass
Trek from Dirapuk to Juthulpuk (via Drolma La Pass). Overnight at guesthouse with full board.

Altitude: 5650 m Dolma La Pass & 4760 m Juthulpuk, Meals: BLD ,Distance: 22km – 8/9 hours (Dirapuk to Juthulpuk).

Day 12: Trek to Darchen and drive to Saga
End of Kailash Kora, Trek Darchen and drive to Saga. Overnight at hotel with full board.

Altitude: 4500 m, Meals: BLD, Distance: 13km Trek (2 hours), 450km Drive –7 hours

Day 13: Drive to Kerung, cross boarder and continue to Kathmandu
Drive back to Kathmandu. Overnight at Hotel with full board.

Altitude: 1350 m, Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner, Distance: 230km &  125km (8/10 hours drive)

Day 14: Fly back home!

Note: There is a Helicopter service from Boarder to Kathmandu, 30 minutes ride and one Helicopter can shuttle 5 people at once (add-on $375 per person / $1875 for 5 people).
