We organize the Saribung peak expedition with full services that start in Jomsom and continue to Saribung peak via Upper Mustang (Lo-Manthang) and Lauri Gompa.

Saribung Expedition is a high demanding trip from Lo- Manthang through a very remote region to the ancient Kingdom of Upper Mustang near the Tibet border. After leaving the Jomsom we walk to the isolated land of Luri Gompa then from there walk up to the Damodar Kunda Base camp. At the end head of this beautiful base camp, we cross the rarely trekked Saribung La pass (6,042m) to enter Phu village.

Upper Mustang is arid and dry with colorful rock formations containing many cave dwellings high up in the cliffs. The first trekking parties were allowed into Upper Mustang in 1992 and it is one of the few places left where one can see undisturbed Tibetan culture.

Our itinerary has been carefully designed for gradual acclimatization to high altitude in order to maximize your chances of safely crossing Saribung La pass and making an ascent of Saribung peak. Acclimatization works much better by starting from Jomsom’s side and before our approach to Saribung we trek up to Damodar Kunda Base Camp. This trail is rarely visited by other trekkers and is a beautiful valley that is rarely visited with blue sheep often seen grazing near Base Camp.

Saribung Peak would be a suitable expedition if you have trekked to high altitudes on previous trips and have basic mountaineering skills including the use of an ice axe and crampons. If you are interested in joining our group and would like to check whether this trip is a suitable expedition for you please send in your pre-trip application through our website and we will reply with feedback and any further training required.

Altitude Sickness

Saribung Peak Expedition (6,387m) offers challenging trails to the summit so there is a potential threat of altitude sickness. Although we provide a well-crafted itinerary with enough acclimatization days and pre-climb training to prevent high-altitude sickness, we recommend that you keep your body hydrated and avoid alcoholic beverages and smoking. Our guides always carry a first-aid kit and pulse oximeter (to measure the oxygen level in your blood). The mountain leaders assigned are experienced, astute and perceptive who can quickly assess the situation. In case of health hazards and unforeseen circumstances, the team will handle it.

Travel Insurance

For Saribung Expedition, you need a travel insurance policy covering all activities and altitudes included in the itinerary. There are chances of Acute Mountain Sickness at higher altitudes, and therefore travel insurance is highly recommended. However, before buying insurance, make sure it offers suitable coverage for the cost of helicopter evacuation and hospitalization in case of an accident or medical emergency. Also, check for vaccination requirements as some travel insurance policies makes it mandatory to immunize yourself before you leave your country.
