Everest Base Camp Trekking after the Corona Virus

Everest Base Camp Trekking is one of the genuine treks in the Khumbu region. On this thrilling trek, we get rewarded by the wonderful mountains with a stunning view of Mt. Everest, unique Sherpa culture, religions, and legendary monasteries. Everest base camp Trekking begins in the vibrant city of Kathmandu where you can explore the world heritage sites, ancient temples, and Buddhist stupas. The trek continues with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, it is a 35-minute flight over the green hills and white snow-capped mountains. Upon arrival at Lukla, this is a tiny airstrip that offers beautiful landscapes and stunning Himalayan giants from where your adventure trek really begins. The Sherpa assistance meet you at Lukla airport. The guide for Everest base camp trekking is very friendly, knowledgeable and well-trained on high altitude sickness.

The trek begins with the normal flat, downhill, and uphill hike to Namche Bazaar where we have two nights to acclimatize. Namche, an amphitheater-style of town is the heartland of the Sherpa kingdom where we can find most of the modern facilities such as the Internet, ATM, Cafes, night bar with happy hours, and a lot of stores for buying or renting gear for Everest base camp trekking.

After having proper acclimatization in Namche, we start our trek to Everest base camp with the first glimpse of a breathtaking view of Himalayan giants including Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, and Khumbu ranges. Tengboche is our next destination where we can have an opportunity to explore the world-famous Tengboche monastery. The next day we will trek to Dingboche, we are staying here for two more nights to have good acclimatization. In Dingboche, we will hike up to 5000m and sleep a night at 4200m. Experts say that hike higher and sleep lower so we follow the same method to complete the Everest base camp trekking without any altitude troubles.

The trek continues to Luboche and Gorakshep, these two places are over 5000m, here we will feel a little bit of altitude and start to have a slight headache, shortness of breath and loss of appetite, which are the normal symptoms for everybody to feel in the high altitude area.
Furthermore, we explore Everest base camp and Kala Patthar to have grand views of breathtaking mountains including Everest, Lhotse, and Nuptse.

Everest Base Camp Trekking – Itinerary

Day 01: Fly from Kathmandu to Lukla (2880m.)
Wake up early in the morning, drive to Kathmandu Airport (domestic terminal) for an amazing flight to Lukla. This is about a 35-minute flight from Kathmandu to Lukla and offers a spectacular range of the Himalayas including Mt. Everest. We meet our trekking crew here in Lukla then start hiking to Phakding, about four hours’ walk. Mostly downhill walk, Lukla is 2800m; we will descend about 200m below to Phakding. Overnight at guest house.

Day 02: Trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3445 m.), 5-6 hours walking

Wake up around 6 AM, breakfast then starts trekking to Namche. Mostly flat and a bit uphill and downhill up to lunch place after lunch at Jorsalle hike three hours of steep steps up to Namche. Overnight at guest house.

Day 03: Rest day at Namche Bazaar (3445m.) for acclimatization

Rest day in Namche. After breakfast, leisurely hike to Everest view hotel which is 1000meter higher than Namche Bazaar. It says, hikes higher sleep lower so this would be a worthy hike to have proper acclimatization. Overnight at the same guest house.

Day 04: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Tengboche (3860m.), 5-6 hours walking

leave Namche for a climb to the top of a ridge and level mountain path that offers an excellent panorama of Thamserku, Kantega, and Kusum Kangri. To the right, there is a steep cliff that drops down to the Dudh Koshi, faintly visible on the valley floor below. We make our way around a branch ridge, and Ama Dablam (6812m) Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse (7855m), and Tawoche (6501m) suddenly appear. After a gentle descent, the mountain path ends; we will come to the fork leading to Gokyo. We descend past two tea houses through the village of Trashinga. Though we cannot see it, we can hear the Dudh Koshi and soon we descend to the river and arrive at Phunki Tenga. It is a long climb to Tengboche; the first half is especially steep. As we climb through the forested zone, the incline eases and a splendid view appears. We continue climbing the mountainside diagonally until we come to the stone gate built by lamas which marks our entry into Tengboche (3860m). We may use the large plateau in front of the splendid monastery as our campsite. There are a lodge and hotel managed by the National Park Service. Tengboche is an important lookout point on this course, and the sunset on Everest and Ama Dablam is especially beautiful.

Day 05: Trek from Tengboche to Dingboche (4260m.), 5-6 hours

Leave Tengboche and the Khumbu mountains as a backdrop and descend a rhododendron-covered area to emerge to a pleasant level area. Being welcomed by a long Mani stone wall we enter the village of Deboche. We continue to Minlinggo and leave the mountain path to cross over a suspension bridge to the left bank of the Imja Khola. Climb the mountain path while looking up at Ama Dablam and Kantega (6779m) as they appear on the opposite bank. Ascend the chorten-lined route, come to a fork, the upper path passes Pangboche and a monastery, take the lower path to Pangboche Olin and its stone wall-enclosed potato field. Pass through the village and cross a stream to a path skirting a rocky area to terraced hills along the riverbank. The trails climb slowly, winding above the Imjatse River, to a big Mani Stupa. From here, the walk is fairly moderate as you enter the Imja-tse Valley beneath the mighty peaks of Ama Dablam, Nuptse, and Lhotse with views of the eastern snow-capped mountains including the Island Peak or Imjatse (6,189m). Dingboche is a beautiful patchwork of fields enclosed by stone walls protecting the crops of barley, buckwheat, and potatoes from the cold winds and grazing animals.

Day 06: Rest day at Dingboche (4260 m.) for acclimatization

This is a significant day for acclimatization. There are some breathtaking views of the North face of Ama Dablam and the Lhotse-Nuptse ridge as we explore this beautiful valley that leads up to Island Peak. The walk is short with a good chance to relax in the afternoon. We have another option as we can hike up to Chhukum. From here we can enjoy the panoramic view of Island peak, Ama Dablam, Makalu, Tawoche peak and others. On the same day, we come back to Dingboche and have a rest.

Day 07: Trek from Dingboche to Lobuche (4930 m.), 5-6 hours walking

The onward journey leads north for up to 50 minutes until we come to a mani-prayer Stupa. The trail is gentle looking down to Pheriche village below. Today’s walk offers views of Mt.Tawache, Ama Dablam and to the north-Pokalde (5741m), Kongma-Tse (5820m), and the great wall of Nuptse. After two hours walk, the trail from Pheriche joins near Dugla (4595m) before a small wooden bridge over the river of Khumbu glacier. We stop at Dugla, for lunch, before continuing for an hour up a steep hill to the top, where there are views of Mt. Pumori and other peaks west of Everest. After a short break, continue trekking up to Lobuche, hidden and sheltered from the wind.

Day 08: Trek from Lobuche to Everest Base Camp (5480m.) via Gorakshep (5180m.), 7-8 hours walking

Trek up the valley following the rocky moraine path, and view icy glacial ponds and icebergs down below of Khumbu glacier. After the last rocky moraine dunes, a short downhill walk brings us to Gorakshep, the flat field below Kala Patthar (5545m) and Mt. Pumori (7145m.) Gorakshep is the location of the original Everest Base Camp with the new camp being further up the valley. Now the trail winds through a rocky path and the Khumbu glacier. The view of Nuptse, Lho-La, and Khumbutse appears in front of us. Sometimes the avalanche can be seen on the way. After a great moment, we retrace back passing through Khumbu glacier with magnificent views of Lobuche, Cholatse, Mt. Pumori, and Tabuche.

Day 09: Trek from Gorakshep to Kala Patthar (5545m.) and trek to Pheriche (4243m.), 6-7 hours walking

We accomplish an early morning climb to Kala Patthar (5545m.) and enjoy the view of sunrise. From Kala Patthar, you can have a panoramic view of Mt. Everest and many other mountain peaks like Mt. Pumori, Mt. Lingtren, Mt. Khumbetse, Mt. Nuptse, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Ama Dablam, Mt. Thamserku and many more. Pheriche is the place where one can make phone calls to any part of the world. We can see the mountain Yaks in Pheriche. Yaks are normally regarded as the porters in this area. The town of Pheriche is known as a windy town. There we can see the perpendicular walls of Cholatse and Tawache. There is located Himalayan Rescue Association Aid Post and foreign volunteer doctors are to provide medical treatment to trekkers as well as local people.

Day 10: Trek from Pheriche to Tengboche (3860m.), 4-5 hours walking

We can have a morning visit to the research center. Then, trek back to Tengboche, an easier descent passing through rhododendron forest, continue walking Tengboche. It is a small village with a famous monastery offering a splendid view of Ama Dablam, green hills and river views.

Day 11: Trek from Tengboche to Namche Bazaar (3445 m), 7-8 hours of walking

The walk from Tengboche is mostly downhill on the main busy trail with a few steep climbs for an hour from the bridge at Phungitenga, near to Shanasha. The walk to Namche is very scenic on a long winding path. En route, we will visit the traditional villages of Khumjung and Khunde. There is an opportunity to visit one of its monasteries, the only monastery that has a Yeti Scalp. From Khumjung village, another 30-minute walk brings us to the village of Khunde, where we can visit the Khunde Hospital funded by Sir Edmund Hillary Trust. After Khunde, a scenic and pleasant walk brings us to Namche for an overnight stay.

Day 12: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Phakding (2640m.), 4-5 hours walking

The trails descend steeply for an early one and a half hours. After that, the path has small ups and down to Phakding through Monjo.

Day 13: Trek from Phakding to Lukla (2880m), 3-4 hours walking

Our final day’s trekking follows the Dudh Koshi back down to Lukla. This last evening in the mountains is the ideal opportunity for a farewell party with the sherpa guides and porters.

Day 14: Fly from Lukla to Kathmandu which takes 30 minutes

We take an early morning flight back to Kathmandu. End service.

Day 06: Trek to Dharapani (1,860m)

Day 07: Trek to Koto (2,600m)

We walk to Koto today, which is just short of Chame, the Headquarters of Manang District. Initially, the trail runs diagonally up the hillside to Timung, where we stop for lunch. After lunch, we trek through Thenchok Village and drop down towards the river to Kupar, which lies above the junction of the Marsyangdi and Nar rivers.

Day 08: Trek to Pisang (3,354m)

We walk through the important village of Chame after 30 minutes and cross the bridge to the north side of the river, near the horticultural apple farm at Brathang. The covered bridge with a door in the middle was allegedly used to prevent robbers from the north from coming into the lower Marsyangdi Valley. We then begin the spectacular ascent to Pisang. Before Pisang the valley doglegs. This begins the transition into the rain shadow experienced between Ghasa and Tukuche, in the Kali Gandaki. The scenery is of magnificent forests and the Marsyangdi River roaring below, as it cuts through the main Himalayan range between Annapurna II and Manaslu.

Day 09: Trek to Braga (3,360m)

Today is a beautiful trekking day on easy terrain through forests to the small ridge at 3,450m. Below and stretching into the distance is the upper Manang Valley. The southern tier of this valley is walled by Annapurna II, III and IV, Gangapurna, and Glacier Dome. To the west and visible just south of a distant sharp rock peak is the Grand Barrier. The basin containing Tilicho Lake is out of view at the head of the valley. To the northwest is Thorong La and Thorungtse and barring the way to Tibet to the north, along the ridge of peaks. Descending from this viewpoint, the path crosses a plain and passes Hongde Airstrip. Further on the Sabji Khola is passed and Braga is reached. Braga is a cliffside village with several monasteries.

Day 10: Acclimatization Day

It is essential to spend time to acclimatize at Braga, before the big height gains over the next three days. We will most likely have a potter up to (Manang, 3,440m) before descending back to Braga for the night. Manang is a large village situated immediately across from a huge glacier descending from Glacier Dome and Gangapurna. A beautiful emerald lake lies at its foot (an easy hour walk from Manag itself – keep an eye out for the huge Griffon Vultures). Manang has a nice atmosphere and there’s a bakery serving coffee and cakes. There are possible side trips to a lake about 3 hrs north of Braga, to the main Manang Gompa, or to Khangsar on the trail to Tilicho Lake.

Day 11: Trek to Chakadunga (3,963m)

It is a relatively short day of trekking through the villages of Manang and Thansey to reach Chakadunga (3,963m). It should take us about 4 hours in total. In the afternoon, to aid our acclimatization, we will have a side trip up the stream, which flows down from the West Chulu peaks.

Day 12: Trek to Thorong Phedi (4,405m)

The trail turns North West up the tributary valley of the Jargeng Khola. It is sometimes possible to see herds of Blue Sheep along the cliffs. We cross a covered cantilevered bridge and ascend to Phedi, the last point before the Thorong La. Thorong Phedi is a large collection of hotels in an impressive situation. Electric light, satellite phones, and showers are something of a surprise at this altitude.

Day 13: Cross the Thorong La (5,416m) to Muktinath (3,800m)

We start well before dawn today to get to the pass before the wind picks up and the snow gets soft. As the sky lightens, the views open up to reveal the Annapurnas to the south and closer Shya Gang, Thorongtse, and to the north Yakawakang, (the Yaks Head). It takes between 3 – 4 hours of steady walking over undulating snow to reach the level pass at 5,416m and a welcome tea shop! Time to sit with a cup of tea and enjoy the incredible position, with views of the Annapurna Range to the south and the Mukat Himal bordering Dolpo to the west. The peak immediately north of the pass is Thorongtse, to the south is an unnamed peak of 6,600m. The descent is first on snow, then scree with superb views of Dhaulagiri and Tukuche. After 3 hours we should reach the Chabarbu tea shop. It is worth making a short detour to the temples near Muktinath, the flames burning in a stream of water are particularly miraculous! A short walk into town is all that’s needed now and a well-deserved rest after a memorable day. Total time 8-10 hours. Muktinath is mentioned in the classic Indian epic, the Mahabharata and we see pilgrims bathing in the holy water flowing from the 108 carved spouts surrounding the Vishnu Temple. It is also home to many ethnic Tibetans and is holy to Buddhists as well, particularly for the temple in which fire miraculously burns in a stream of water.

Day 14: Trek to Jomson (2,710m)

From Muktinath, we can either descend directly to the busy trading center of Jomsom, or we can walk via the small, typically Tibetan village of Kagbeni (The entry point for the restricted area of the Kingdom of Mustang.) It is a long, gradual descent through spectacular scenery, with Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri to the south and the Kaligandaki River flowing down from Mustang to the north. We reach the river at Eklobatti and head south on the gravel plains, which can be hot and very windy hereafter mid-morning. On arrival in Jomsom, there may be time to take a stroll down through apple orchards to the picturesque farming village of Marpha. Alternatively, there are many good lodges in the village and we may just wish to take things easy.

Day 15: Fly via Pokhara to Kathmandu.

Langtang Valley Trek to Kyanjin Gompa Trek

Day 01 – Drive from Kathmandu to Dhunche (1966m.)

It takes about eight hours. You head north out of Kathmandu driving through scenic foothills and ridgeline vistas to Dhunche. The first part of your drive up to Trishuli Bazaar is quite smooth. The path now moves along the gravel road. During the rainy season, the path is sometimes blocked due to landslides. Your drive from Kathmandu to the destination is to be made by either a local bus or land cruiser.

Day 02 – Trek from Dhunche to Syabru Gaon (2581m.)

It takes about five and a half hours. Trek to Syabru Gaon (6950ft, 2120m). The trekking today is very leisurely through forests and terraced hill slopes. As you enter Syabru, you descend to the ridgeline that separates the Langtang Khola from the Trisuli River. Syabru is a beautiful village stretched out along the ridgeline. You will continue through the village to your campsite about fifteen minutes beyond on the slopes below the village. The sunset is magnificent; brilliantly backlighting the houses perched on the ridgeline above. From here you can enjoy a spectacular view of Lantang Lirung (7245m.) and the Tibetan Himal ranges.

Day 03 – Trek from Syabru Gaon to Lama Hotel (2470m.)

It takes about five hours. The trail descends along the ridge on Syabru’s main street and then drops to the Ghopche Khola (2050 m.) and again descends to the Landslide (1810m.). Afterward, your trek ascends gently to Rimche (2400m.) through Bamboo (1960m.) and at the end, your trail is level to the Lama Hotel. En route, you could see red pandas, wild monkeys, and bears if you are lucky.

Day 04 – Trek from Lama Hotel to Langtang village (3430m.)

It takes about six hours. As you continue climbing there are occasional glimpses of Langtang Lirung between the trees. At Ghora Tabela (3000m), the trail emerges from the forest. While walking here, you can catch a glimpse of white monkeys and local birds. Once there was a Tibetan resettlement project here, but now it is a Nepalese army post though it has no permanent inhabitants. The trail continues to climb gently and the valley widens, passing a few temporary settlements used by herders who bring their livestock to graze in the high pastures during the summer months. There is a monastery that we can visit shortly before arriving at the village of Langtang, the headquarters of the Langtang National Park. The houses of Langtang and its neighboring villages are of the flat-roofed Tibetan style, surrounded by stone walls enclosing fields of buckwheat, potatoes, wheat, turnips, and barley.

Day 05 – Trek from Langtang Village to Kyangjin (3870m.)

After about Three hours of trekking, The trail climbs gradually through small villages and yak pastures as the valley opens out further and the views become more extensive. After crossing several small streams and moraines, the trail reaches the settlement at Kyangjin. There is a small monastery and a government-operated cheese factory. You will arrive at Kyangjin by lunch time allowing time to acclimatize and explore the area. It is a dramatic setting, with snow-covered peaks surrounding us in all directions. At this point, you can enjoy the panoramic view of Dorje Lakpa (6990m.), Langtang Ri (6370m.), and Langtang Lirung (7245m.).

Day 06 – Rest day at Kyangjin Gompa and excursion around

Today is the rest day. You can visit the monastery and the cheese factory, walk up the moraine to see the spectacular ice faces and tumbling glaciers of Langtang Lirung or ascend Kyangjin Ri [4350m], directly behind the village, for a breath-taking panorama of the Langtang peaks.

Day 07 – Trek from Kyangjin Gompa to Lama Hotel

It takes about six hours. From Kyangjin you retrace your route, following the Langtang Khola to Langtang village and on to Ghora Tabela. After lunch, you continue the steep descent to Lama Hotel.

Day 08 – Trek from Lama Hotel to Syabru Besi

It takes about five hours. The upper part of the trail is more beautiful for the panoramic view of mountains and green hill views. This path is broader and remains sunny through the different Sherpa and Tamang villages. The first half part of the trail is gradually down and then the trail does steep descent to the Syabru Besi (1600m.). There was run a project called Chilime Power Plant.
